Larry Boy is right-on with his comments about leaving your ego at the door
at a jam. All levels SHOULD be welcome. Think about it. Experienced players
can hear up and coming players and even learn from their process of
improvement. The experienced player, if he/she is welcoming to the newbies,
can share knowledge and help them grow. We are in a minority music community
in a vast sea of commercialism. Shouldn't we nurture each other?
Art Tatum, perhaps the greatest jazz pianist of the 20th century, was known
to go night after night to hear a mediocre player because he (Tatum) had
"heard something" that player had done which intrigued him, and wanted to
hear it again. Yeah, sometimes it's painful, but there are a lot of ways to
learn from other players, even if it's what NOT to do.
As far as the ability of the players on stage, my good friend Michael Bay in
Cleveland usually tries to get a mix of abilities on stage. The stronger
players will carry the set. Sometimes everyone on stage is of high quality
and the playing and listening experiences go up several notches. That's
great when it's possible. But Michael nurtures all players. It's a great
experience and six years of jams there helped me a LOT.
